Keeping everyone included

I work at a kids camp and i receive kids who HATE football, the only reason why they are with me is that their parents force them to go. How do i make sure that they not only have a good time, but are also engaged and included?

  • Hi Toby, thank you for your question. I have been in a similar position in the past and the most important factor is fun, make the session as fun as possible for everyone.

Some key things that have worked for me in the past:

    - Don't be afraid to use different equipment such as bigger and smaller footballs. You could also play matches with a variety of balls on the side e.g. a rugby ball and a netball. If the ball goes off the pitch a player has to grab a different ball and this way the game is always changing.

    - Change the scoring system. There are 100's of ways to score goals, passing to a team mate, scoring a goal, stopping the ball on a line, using a different number of goals and so on.

    - Challenge players. You can do this individually or as a group. Challenges can consist of anything from keepy uppies in the warm up to taking on players in a game. Always look to challenge players but be prepared to set different challenges for players based on ability.

If you need anything else please let me know!
